Our culture war.

Yesterday it was my quarterly turn to share a message with the men’s group I meet with every Thursday morning. About two dozen of us gather on Zoom to share biblical insights and encouragement. Leading up to the meeting I became energized to share about the ongoing (and worsening) culture war we’re experiencing in our nation and the effect that ideology is having on it, unwittingly for the most part. Few people in today’s world understand that our faith has a clear ideological stance or worldview that contrasts with some notions that are becoming prevalent in our society.

To define our topic a bit, a culture war is a cultural conflict between social groups and the struggle for dominance of their values, beliefs, and practices. It commonly refers to topics on which there is general societal disagreement and polarization in societal values. Powerful ideologies are so complex and hold together with such a degree of internal consistency that the longer I study them the more clear it becomes that they have spiritual life and roots. Our faith is authored and finished by the Triune God, while other competing ideologies are deceptive counterfeits that promise freedom but deliver bondage. As Paul wrote, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Please join me in prayer for God’s intervention and strength as we seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness in the midst of the spiritual war that swirls around us. This is an important and timely challenge to our faith in our day and age, so please feel free to contact me! with any comments or questions you may have. I appreciate your input.
