Glossary

A glossary with brief Scripture passages including terms used to describe many of the spiritual realities and experiences involved in Christian faith.

Acceptance – Being received graciously by others, even in the presence of disagreement.
Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7

Anger – A feeling of irritation or outrage based on a strong sense of injustice or wrong.
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger. Ephesians 4:26
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Ephesians 4:31

Ascension – Elevation to a higher position or status.
No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. John 3:13

Awakening – Arousal from either sleep or serious misapprehension to a sense of the way things really are.
For anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Ephesians 5:14

Believe – Believing in someone includes appreciating, knowing, and trusting them.
Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12

Brotherhood – A close bond between people based on an awareness of kinship, either familial or spiritual.

Conviction – A strong spiritual awareness of right and wrong that is deeply felt and alters one’s attitudes and behavior.

Creation – Brief definition.

Death – Brief definition.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 6:23
Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.

Faith – Another word for “trust”
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Fear – Brief definition.
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 1 John 4:18

Freedom – Being loosed from bondage to falsehood and set free to do what is right and true.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

Grace – God’s unmerited favor
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Joy – A God-given sense of deep acceptance and well-being unrelated to one’s particular circumstances.
Count it all joy when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. James 1:2-3

Justice – True judgment tempered by divine mercy.

Liberty – The ability to do what is right in God’s eyes.
But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. James 1:25

Regeneration – Brief definition.
He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5

Remission – Brief definition.

Repentance – The act of turning away from wrong attitudes and behavior to godly alternatives.

Restitution – The process of making amends. Making good of or giving an equivalent for some injury or loss.
When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the Lord, and that person realizes his guilt, he shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong. Numbers  5:6-7

Restoration – The process of being brought back from a worn and damaged condition to the Creator’s initial design for your life.

Resurrection – The process of being raised in one’s totality from death to life.
But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 1 Corinthians 15:13

Righteousness – The state of being in right relationship with yourself and everyone and everything around you.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

Salvation – Brief definition.

Sanctification – Brief definition.
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:23

Sin – Behavior that falls short of God’s best or misses the mark entirely.

Transformation – To be utterly changed within from an old way of thinking and feeling to a new one conforming to God’s ideal plan.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

Transgression – Wrong behavior that intentionally overrides both internal and external prompts.
Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart; there is no fear of God before his eyes. Psalm 36:1
Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Romans 4:7

Trust – Brief definition.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Truth – Brief definition.
Jesus said to him [Thomas], “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world – to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. John 18:37-38

Wisdom – Knowing what the best attitudes, behavior, and timing are for any plan of action.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. Proverbs 9:10
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5
